This special issue is devoted to new architecture in Latvia, with a focus on 25 works completed since 2000. It also introduces the historical architecture that provides context for these contemporary works, many of which respectfully coexist with the historical architecture and city. A diverse and multi-layered physical and cultural setting has emerged since Latvia gained independence, and the nation’s architects have risen to the challenge. Featured are works in Central Riga by Fine Young Urbanists, Zaiga Gaile, SZK and Partners, and more, plus projects in Riga’s Old Town by Sudraba Arhitektura and Jaunromans un Abele, as well as architecture in non-urban environments.
